I've abandoned this blog for quite awhile. The allure of tumblr with its quick clean posts and instantaneous outpourings of love and affection proved to be irresistible. I've forgotten how nice it is to write. A lot has gone on since the summer. I have to say in the interim I've failed quite spectacularly in ways I never would have fathomed possible. My fourteen year old self hidden somewhere in my brain writhes in overachieving agony and despair. In certain places though I have found serene patches of quiet (well one case of loud excellently lit runway) success. I've fallen in and out of love, purchased new large glasses, finished two sketchbooks, perfected my Japanese cooking skills, and managed to dredge the last bits of myself from the overwhelming stress and unhappiness that was carnegie mellon and reassembled them into a curious level headed human capable of all the functional human things.

I promise to start filling in this empty space with some of the projects I've finished in the time being (I have to beat my portfolio website like a rug to get some random horrible creatures out that I never noticed snuck in) and will return shortly.

alexhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03695485752460825434noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1042837332088782640.post-88826095351128520902013-02-19T17:23:00.000-05:002013-02-21T07:03:41.012-05:00Valiant in gif formSo I haven't posted here in forever, I've fallen down the dark bottomless hole of tumblr I'm afraid. I forgot to post it here, but this horrible monster of a project is finally finished!

I don't know if you remember, but a few months ago I submitted this storyboard to my animation class. We all voted, and the top five were chosen to be made into animation. I was assigned/placed in a team of six (soon to be five) and we had roughly three months to create this animation.

We did all of the physical animation in Maya, and I either created from scratch, or had a hand in finishing/texturing, all of the models for the exception of the wolf, Skoll, who was created by Paul Miller, and textured by Katie Nestor.

Paul and I both wrote code for the world tree, but Paul ended up creating the final geometry, since OpenFrameworks is much more powerful and able to create more complicated geometry than my Processing script. I sculpted in the root details and rearranged/cleaned up the branches using ZBrush.

We broke up the actual animating by scene. I personally animated the fight scene, (since really that was the one least fleshed out in my storyboard, and I was excited to work on it) which starts around 1:28 and finishes at 1:44.

alexhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03695485752460825434noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1042837332088782640.post-35514082340026351032012-05-19T22:01:00.000-04:002013-02-21T07:03:40.945-05:00JudithSo this was a bit of a stumbling first start at a comic. I scripted the thing after very little sleep in a stroke of inspiration at around 3 in the morning, and I sat back on my heels and thought to myself, "Hah! This will be both brilliant and hilarious!". 48 hours later after pencils and the inking, I realized that ...this wasn't the case. I'm not sure if the lack of dialogue after the first two pages is jarring or not either. I actually like telling stories without it much more, and I think the piece gets much stronger without it.

I'm still missing pages here and there (I might post the sketchy progress work later), but I really like the sort of cartoony art style, and the way guard 2 looks a lot like my very old and very good friend Jon, who was visiting me that weekend.

Oh man, this one was on the tightest deadline ever, I had a notion of what I wanted in my head and then whipped out the pages after doing some quick character design and figuring out how to draw old ladies. I didn't get terribly far story-wise (and for someone who likes to write quite a lot I have a really hard time with comic dialogue (to be honest, Kiera Wolfe always collaborates with me on the successful ones)), but I was really happy with the art style and all the crazy different things I got to experiment with. I was really looking forward to having Granny interacting with the Vikings/Valkyries, and maybe this will end up being one of the projects I slave on for the summer.

Valhalla does not agree with Granny, and she ends up leading the Einherjar against raving frost giant hordes so she can't get to a proper afterlife, with tea, scones, and her husband.
Mechanical System

Once we had the waterbomb fabric, we looked at different mechanical systems that we could use to actuate it. We finally decided on monofilament truss system that we threaded through eyelets that we laser cut and hand sewed onto the vertices of the waterbomb valleys. We used these to control the movement we wanted from the dress via 3 cords made up smaller connections from the wiring in the dress. One string controlled the front vertical movement of the dress, the other the back vertical movement and the last one controlled constricting horizontal movement.

Electrical System

Mahvish and I are both software kind of girls with experience in small scale robotics, so we were super excited to jump in and …learn some basic electrical engineering. We designed the system to be relatively straightforward with that in mind. We anchored most of the heavier elements to the incredibly sturdy zipper of the dress so we wouldn’t need crazy boning/corsetry to hold it up.

One of the most exciting elements of this project for us (and ultimately, the key to our doom), was the fact that we built the key elements of the electrical system ourselves. We hacked some basic hobby servos Mahvish had for continuous rotation by removing the pentometer and replacing it with two 2.2kohm resistors. We also built a voltage regulator so we could power our initial design, which required 5 normal servos, off of a single 9volt that we ended up scrapping, but were immensely proud of. Lastly the breath sensor built into the collar took advantage of the thermochromatic paint. When the wearer breathes on it, the paint changes color which is picked up by a light sensor and sent to the Lilypad.

( 1 ) Knit/Felt myself a fox mask/hat inspired by these adorable creations by Everlasting Sprout. Ahaha I'll probably leave eye holes in mine though.

( 2 ) Reverse engineer how these mindblowingly fragile + beautiful creations of Frances Geesin were created and try something of a similar vein myself. From what I can gather, they seem like they are electroplated polypropylene fibres that she completely covered a mold with, and either let dissolve into the electroplating bath or carefully sculpted to begin with. My head is spinning with the possibilities.

(3) 3D print/electroplate some chain mail. Now that I've discovered electroplating (oh ho how I'm a sucker for SCIENCE) I can think of all sorts of interesting applications for it. I've always wanted to try 3D printing chain mail (the fact that you can print the links already intersecting is pretty damn cool) but its hard to actually use it afterwards since 3D printed objects still read painfully plastic. However, if you can electroplate your finished product, you'll have a lightweight, flexible, beautiful chain mail.

(4) Build myself one of these beautifully designed electric spinning wheels by Glacial Wanderer over at Dreaming Robots. This really is an amazing project. Mr. Wanderer designed the thing himself based off of more traditional spinning wheel setups and then released the dFab files and careful instructions on how to recreate the electronics involved over on his site. So the entire thing is completely open source and aimed at knitters/fiber nerds ( like myself ) who usually are completely overcharged for such things due to it being such a niche market.

(images via here, here and here)

(5) Learn how to spin on said spinning machine. There's something about the texture, color, and the really calm and simple process of suggesting order on some completely wild and unruly thing that really hooks me. Knitting is a little bit like doing crack, except it calms you down and you usually end up with something cozy afterwards rather than the shattered remnants of your former life.

(oh PS, that first image is from the Etsy site of this really wonderful girl who makes completely covetable hand dyed roving. So you know, if any of my family (aka all of the readers of this blog) is wants to champion this noble cause ( huh huh? ), any one of her braids would cause me to promptly expire from happiness)alexhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03695485752460825434noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1042837332088782640.post-80337800713012446172012-03-01T12:18:00.000-05:002013-02-21T07:03:41.002-05:00Magnetic Mesh | A Processing Sketch

This is an evolution of a quick processing sketch I did for Golan's class based on a magnetic physics system. I was incredibly disappointed since I built it from scratch without using any physics libraries, but then it just looked like any other pseudo generic flocking blaaaah. So I decided to turn it into an app to generate interesting background patterns for me to use in my illustrations. You can read me talk more about it on the iacd blog.

This video also illustrations the awesome iterative work process you can have in processing, just building off sketches quite painlessly. It doesn't really pay off to work this way in other coding frameworks like Cinder or OF since it takes so long to test and compile, and it really makes more sense to sit down and figure out what you want and then carefully plan and code. Processing kind of lets you just go with whatever whims you have and test them in these quick and lightweight sketches, I love it.
Here are the revised storyboards that flesh out the story a bit. Caroline Record was partnered with me to help, and the first few new slides are hers :)

If you haven't already, check out this post where I talk about how I created the pattern that I'm printing here first.

So I made the decision to try to print the fabric here on campus rather than shipping the file off to Spoonflower or one of the other companies that will do this work for you. This was partly for budgetary reasons, but also because I wanted to be involved in every step of the process, and this is a big part of it.

Unfortunately our print lab was out of nice rolls of HP print fabric, so I ended up ironing on some fusible to the back of some basic cotton I had and running it through the printer. First up some test swatches.

Since this fabric was just cheap stuff from Joannes and not treated with anything to make it better suited to absorbing the ink, the colors didn't come out quite as I intended. So I tried two versions, one normal and one with the red keyed out (since the printer handled black and blue much better)

Ultimately, I was very attached to the red design and just keyed up the contrast on photoshop ( I also can layer the same red sheer I used in the final gown of my collection to intensify the color during garment construction).

And after a stressful hour and a half of wrangling with the printer, what I ended up with was a beautiful yard and a half of custom reaction diffusion fabric! I can't wait to turn this into a finished piece, even though I ended up eating a lot of my fabric doing test swatches, so I don't have quite enough to make a complete dress, a bodice will most likely suffice.

I also ended up using the black and white version to line the white dress in my collection, a detail you can't see from the runway photos :)

alexhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03695485752460825434noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1042837332088782640.post-24474484932289540532012-02-15T16:48:00.002-05:002013-02-21T07:03:40.940-05:00Reaction Diffusion Textiles and Pattern Making

Okay this this particular look from the collection, modeled by the super badass Madison, I dropped the ball on just a bit.

As lovely and clean as it looks in the white, I really wanted to use it as a base for my reaction diffusion algorithm, with the end result looking more like this. (Though I do love the clean well tailored lines)

To that end, I've been working on remaking it using a little more digital prowess, including the textile printing that was slightly out of my budget for the original. This was actually the first dress I designed for the collection, thus there were many many tortured muslin iterations as I learned how to make a well fitting garment.

After finally getting one that fit nicely to my dress form, I tore it apart and scanned it in. Madison's version was actually heavily tailored from this pattern (since we only were able to fit our models after winter break), and her hips and arms are much more slender than my own or the dress form's.

From here, I was a quick live trace away from a nice clean vector image of my pattern to scale, which I then threw into a slightly tailored reaction diffusion application in Cinder. For those of you who have never encountered reaction diffusion, it looks something like this.

It essentially is two equations that can be used to simulate a chemical reaction that is used in nature to generate an infinite number of animal patterns/prints. This is old code from earlier my knit reaction diffusion work. Toxiclibs does an amazing job of summarizing the more technical aspects of the simulation if you are interested.

I was particularly interested in incorporating this simulation/generative art into my fashion design work since I think it draws a very elegant parallel to the furs/skins more often used in high fashion and on the run way. This application allows you to grow your own personally customized "skin" directly onto the pattern pieces for an organic and personalized feel that you don't need to carefully skin hundreds of tropical fish for.

Here's the final pattern, with each pattern piece thrown into the application and its texture grown onto it.

Sol was a Norse goddess who was given the task of bearing the sun across the sky, while her brother Mani was entrusted with the moon. Each day and night they are hotly pursued by a pair of wolves Skoll and Hati, the children of Fenrir. Skoll desires to swallow the sun whole, plunging the world into darkness and bringing about Ragnorok, the end of days, upon which their father will break free of the binds the gods placed on him and devour Odin. On the rare occasion Skoll does succeed, the gods, eager to prevent Ragnorok, hotly pursue him and force him to cough it up. Until they catch him however, there is a solar eclipse.

Here Sol climbs up the branches of the World Tree to place the sun in the firmament, while Skoll is a bit more wily (and highly inspired by Coyote of Tom Siddel's brilliant Gunnerkrigg Court)
Since this wasn't so much a technical project, but an aesthetic one I took some liberties with the algoirthm, blowing portions of it way up (like the bodice here) or just using strips for the waist band and the edging.
